Emma Ruth is named for two of her great grandmas. Emma is the name of my dad's mom - she turns 94 this summer! Ruth is the Matthew's grandma on his mom's side of the family. While I never had the opportunity to meet Ruth I feel like I know her from the stories Matthew's family tells.
Both Emma and Ruth farmed land with their husbands and raised their families in northern Colorado. They worked hard and neither were shy about using a shovel to chop off the head of a snake that came too close to their houses. Emma had a fabulous vegetable and rose garden that she cared for into her eighties. Eating fresh raspberries and peas from her garden is one of my fondest childhood memories. When Ruth no longer farmed she opened a quilt shop. Matthew still has several of the quilts he made with her. Every time we come across one of his quilts he launches in to the story of visiting his grandma and getting to choose his fabric.
Our Emma Ruth shares her name with these two great women, and she'll likely grow-up to be just like them - one of a kind.
