Lisa and I just discussed the logistics of participating in next week's primary caucuses (Maya day care - check!, dinner - check!, precinct number/location - check!). We're both registered voters (have been since moving to Colorado), and unaffiliated to any political parties. I guess we should have taken sides when 2+ years ago when we registered to vote, or read the fine print to become eligible to vote in primary caucuses. After scouring the Denver Election website and local newspapers, I found out we might be able to vote in next week's primary - we're not eligible:
In order to vote in a precinct caucus, the voter must be a resident of the precinct for thirty days, and have registered to vote no later than twenty-nine days before the caucus, and be affiliated with the political party holding the caucus for at least two months as shown on the books of the county clerk and recorder; except that any registered voter who has turned 18 years old or has become a naturalized citizen during the two months preceding the meeting may vote at caucus even though the voter has been affiliated with the political party for less than two months. (Cherry Creek News - November 26, 2007)Resident of precinct - yes!
Registered to vote - yes!
Affiliated with political party for at least 2 months - no!
I know, it's my fault. I guess I just ignored many of the election-related newspaper articles several months ago when caucus voting eligibility details were published. I'm disappointed.
I'm naive, and thought that by not affiliating ourselves with a particular political party, we'd be able to watch the debates and results from the last couple of months, and vote for the candidate that is most appealing, be in republican or democrat. Our plans have changed. I guess we'll just stay home and watch American Gladiators instead.

i can relate. i just found out that my mail-in ballot for the primary doesn't count because wa democratic delegates are all decided at the caucus. i won't be in town. republicans, however, split their delegates between the caucus and primary. sheesh. i was trying to be a responsible citizen. i suppose i supported the post office by using a stamp.
